It was a FREAKING BLIZZARD!!!!

That was yesterday. The day started at a "balmy" 32 degrees; and Dude had a couple doctor appointments in Norfolk - so I went with her. The first appointment was at 10 - and it was a little after 11 when she got out. The 2nd appointment needed to be canceled, so we talked about going somewhere for lunch. It had gotten colder...with the wind kicking up....(the weatherman did predict that) but we went to WalMart to pick up a few things first - and when we came out of there - it was snowing and even MORE windy.

So we decided to head for home, and just stop at the Hilltop for lunch. She had put a roast, potatoes, and carrots in the crock pot for the Schmits and Leon - since Bill & Justin were starting on laying her new floor. (that'll be a story for another post) But we figured they would be done eating by the time we got there.

When we got out on the road.......it was sooooooo bad. There were times we could not see a thing! So, we carefully made our way toward home. Her cell phone rang - but we were in a "dead zone" so as soon as I could see that there was a signal, I called back. Sindee wanted to know where the flour or corn starch was - to make gravy. After I hung up, we decided we were just going to go on home to eat. It was getting even worse - could barely SEE the Hilltop from the highway.

After eating, and Sindee and I playing around on the computer (during which time the power went off a couple times) Sindee decided to head for home. Dude asked if I was ready to go home and I said, yes. We could not even see my house from hers - and could not see if there was any other vehicle on the street. But we made it to my house and brought in the stuff I bought at WalMart. The wind & snow was so bad, we could barely see in front of us. She then offered to take Sammie out - but of course she had to shovel snow first - it had already drifted so bad.

She went back home - and about 10 minutes later (after we had both reset clocks, etc) the power went off again. We talked by cell phone....since you know - without power, those cordless phones do not work. She said Leon had gone to the shop to put out a bale of hay for the horses, and Sindee had called Bill before she even got past the city limits, to tell him it was so bad - he and Justin needed to leave for home, too.

I later found out that it took them nearly 45 minutes to get the 3 to 4 miles to their house. Sindee said she cried the whole way.

The power came on after about an hour, so that was good. It's not good when you don't have heat because the power is off. I could not see out of any of my windows, they were all plastered with snow. The news today said the worst of the storm was between 2:30 & 7:00. By dark, the wind had gone down, but was still bitter cold. I had to shovel snow again for Sammie to go out.

So....my driveway has a drift again - and I won't be going out.

I LOVE NEBRASKA!!!!!!

  1. I forgot to mention that the TV said the winds were 35 miles per hour, with gusts over 55. Temps were by then in the single digits.

  2. Yep, ya gotta love Nebraska to put up with the weather, it can change in a heart beat. But thank God for getting us home safely, we went to Norfolk today for my appointment that thank God got changed yesterday or we would have been coming home in the worst of weather possible and going down my favortite hill north of Norfolk that has the guard rail with my name on..... well anyway there were five cars in the ditch at the top of the hill thank God they didn't collide farther north or they would have had to replace MY guard rail..... It still wasn't too spify going to Norfolk this morning at 7:30 because of icy patches but a whole lot better than yesterday. And I hate those 10:00 late starts, can't wait for 74 more days to get gone. Well that is actual work days I think my actual days is like maybe 128??? something like that.

  3. I feel so bad for you guys on having to put up with such crappy weather. I don't miss that at all!!! I don't think I could have handled another winter on the farm. Especially as cold as it has been up there this year. My electric bill would have killed me.

  4. THIS is why I live in Texas! I don't do cold, and I really don't do snowy roads. Yuck! I hope you all stay warm and safe! Love you all!
